Philco 38-7CS Restoration

Hagstar's Travels > Philco 38-7CS Restoration
I bought this somewhat rare chairside locally from a newspaper ad last Fall. It has six tubes and AM and SW bands. It had been badly refinished in polyurethane years ago, and a turntable had been bolted to the lower shelf area and removed leaving four gaping holes. After stripping, plugging the holes, then tonering, lacquering and chassis restoration here she is. I also made short videos of the bizarre "Cone-Centric" dial being tuned manually. Schematic can be found at http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/256/M0013256.htm .

A sad looking thing as purchased for $40.00.

I had to bleach the wood after stripping to remove (nearly) all the stains.

MUCH better, though the dial drive is funky at best. Raising the knob silences the speaker, and you can then push it down over cones that serve as stops for various stations. Once fully depressed the station comes back on. In an intermediate postion you can tune manually. My dial is engraved for local Vermont stations so I just readjusted the tracking to fit these marks.

The top looks much nicer after staining, tonering, and lacquering after bleaching.

I also had to salvage a speaker for it as the original was missing, Hank Brazeal did a nice reconing job.

This is a short video of the Cone-Centric dial tuning through the AM band in manual mode.

You can hear an unknown WWV station near the beginning as we scan the evening AM dial from 540-1650.
